## John Frusciante

Melody, restraint and feeling at the heart of funk rock

John Frusciante was born in Queens, New York, in 1970 and grew up largely in Southern California. As a teenager he immersed himself in Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck and punk and new wave guitarists, and he became a devoted fan of Red Hot Chili Peppers. After the death of their guitarist Hillel Slovak, the band recruited the eighteen-year-old Frusciante in 1988. His first album with them, Mother's Milk (1989), gave the group its biggest success yet.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991), recorded with producer Rick Rubin in a rented Los Angeles mansion, made the Chili Peppers global stars thanks to songs like “Give It Away” and “Under the Bridge.” Frusciante's playing moved from hyperactive funk toward sparse, melodic parts. Uncomfortable with sudden fame, he quit abruptly during a 1992 tour of Japan. Over the following years he released the raw, home-recorded solo albums Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt and Smile from the Streets You Hold during a very difficult period.

After recovering his health, he rejoined the band in 1998. Californication (1999) became one of the best-selling records of their career, and By the Way (2002) showcased layered harmonies and guitar arrangements influenced by 1960s pop and new wave. The double album Stadium Arcadium (2006) won the Grammy for Best Rock Album and featured some of his most ambitious soloing. In parallel he pursued a prolific solo career, including six releases in quick succession in 2004 and 2005, and the side project Ataxia.

Frusciante left again in 2009, releasing The Empyrean that year and then turning toward electronic music, including acid house under the name Trickfinger. He also contributed guitar to several albums by The Mars Volta. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2012. In late 2019 he rejoined Red Hot Chili Peppers once more, and both Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen arrived in 2022.

## The sound

Frusciante's playing is built on taste and melody rather than speed. He often leaves space, using chord fragments, double-stops and sparse funk rhythms that lock with Flea's bass. His solos grow from singable phrases into bursts of distortion and feedback, drawing on Hendrix's expressiveness, the angular textures of post-punk guitarists such as John McGeoch and the emotional directness of 1960s pop. Recognizable tools include a vintage Stratocaster, cutting Boss DS-2 crunch and Big Muff sustain, and falsetto backing vocals that function as an extra harmony instrument in the band's sound.

- **1962 Fender Stratocaster (sunburst)** (guitar) His primary guitar from the late 1990s onward, heard across Californication and beyond.
- **1962 Fender Jaguar** (guitar) Used for thinner, more jangly tones and alternate textures.
- **1955 Gretsch White Falcon** (guitar) A hollowbody used for fuller, vintage-style clean sounds.
- **Marshall Silver Jubilee** (amp) A key amp in his late-1990s and 2000s rigs.
- **Marshall Major** (amp) A very loud 200-watt head used for massive stage tone.
- **Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion** (effect) His signature crunch, especially in turbo mode for lead boosts.
- **Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi** (effect) Thick fuzz for sustaining, feedback-laden solos.
- **Ibanez WH-10 wah** (effect) His favoured wah pedal for funky and vocal-like leads.
