Nuno Bettencourt

Funk-metal firepower with a pop songwriter's heart

Nuno Bettencourt was born in the Azores, the youngest of ten children, and his family moved to Hudson, Massachusetts, when he was four. Music filled the household, and he tried several instruments before focusing on guitar in his teens, practicing obsessively and absorbing the melodic, orchestrated style of Queen's Brian May alongside the flash of Eddie Van Halen. By the mid-1980s he was a fixture on the Boston club scene, where he joined singer Gary Cherone in a band that would become Extreme.

Extreme's self-titled debut arrived in 1989, but it was Pornograffitti, released in 1990, that made them stars. The album mixed funk grooves, hard rock riffs and a dazzling guitar showcase, while the acoustic ballad More Than Words reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, followed by Hole Hearted in the top five. The paradox of a shred hero famous for a gentle acoustic song followed him for years. In 1992 Extreme played the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert at Wembley.

The ambitious III Sides to Every Story added orchestral arrangements and a sprawling concept structure, and Waiting for the Punchline followed in 1995 before the band split in 1996. Bettencourt then released the solo album Schizophonic, on which he played almost everything, and formed the band Mourning Widows, which found an especially strong audience in Japan. He followed with Population 1 and DramaGods, and he also played in Perry Farrell's Satellite Party, keeping a low commercial profile while producing and writing prolifically.

Extreme reunited and released Saudades de Rock in 2008. From 2009 to 2013 he was Rihanna's lead guitarist on several world tours, introducing him to a vast new audience, and he joined her for the Super Bowl LVII halftime show in 2023. That same year Extreme released Six, and the solo from its single Rise went viral, sparking a wave of renewed praise from fellow guitarists. In 2025 he launched his own independent guitar brand, Nuno Guitars, after decades with Washburn.

The sound

Bettencourt blends funk rhythm guitar with hard rock shred. His right hand is the core of his sound: tight, syncopated sixteenth-note strumming and muted scratching that lock in with the drums like a funk player's. On top he adds fast legato, tapping, sweeping arpeggios and bursts of chromatic picking, but his solos are usually composed and melodic, with Brian May's sense of arrangement. He also writes intricate acoustic parts, as the percussive, fingerpicked accompaniment of More Than Words shows, and he layers multiple harmonized guitars in the studio.
