Swing to Bop comes from informal recordings made at Minton's Playhouse, the Harlem club where many ideas that became bebop were being worked out. Charlie Christian, on his Gibson ES-150, takes long, riff-driven choruses that start in swing phrasing and gradually lean toward bop, with more chromatic passing notes and phrases that cross bar lines. The recording quality is rough, but the invention in his playing is clear. It captures a musical shift in progress rather than a polished performance. Listen for how he builds each chorus from short, repeated figures that he gradually develops, and for moments where a line seems to push beyond the chord changes, hinting at the harmonic freedom that bebop players would soon take further.
