Carry On is the two-part opener of Déjà Vu, and Stephen Stills plays driving acoustic and electric guitar throughout. The first section is energetic and rhythmic, with Stills' acoustic providing a relentless pulse beneath the harmonies. The second part shifts gear, and the electric guitar takes a more prominent role. It is a great example of Stills' skill as both a rhythm and lead player, and of how much of the group's instrumental drive rested on his shoulders. Listen for the transition between the two sections, where the guitar's role changes and the song opens up into a looser, more expansive groove.
