Get Me is J Mascis at his most openly bluesy, a slow, aching song that gives him room to stretch out. His solo is a long, fuzz-drenched outpouring, bending notes until they nearly tear and letting sustain carry phrases far past where most players would stop. The Jazzmaster, pushed through heavy distortion, has a woolly, swollen tone that sounds huge without being precise, and that looseness is the point. For indie rock players in the early 1990s, Mascis made the extended guitar solo acceptable again after punk had largely banished it. His phrasing owes as much to Neil Young as to any guitar hero. Listen for the long held bends near the climax, where the pitch wobbles on purpose and the tone seems to bloom.
