Super Stupid
Funkadelic, 1971, from Maggot Brain. Solo by Eddie Hazel.
From the Maggot Brain album; a hard-rock track that shows Hazel's heavier side.
Maggot Brain is best known for its ten-minute title solo, but Super Stupid shows Eddie Hazel's heavier side. This is essentially a hard-rock track, with a driving riff and fuzzed guitar that sits closer to Black Sabbath or Grand Funk than to James Brown. Hazel's leads are aggressive and loose, full of rapid bends and gritty tone, driving the song forward rather than floating above it. It is a useful reminder that early Funkadelic was as much a rock band as a funk one, and that Hazel was comfortable at both extremes. Listen for how the guitar and rhythm section push against each other, the track barely holding together, which is exactly its charm.
