Honey Hush captures Paul Burlison's raw, aggressive style at full force. His tone is gritty and broken-up, far dirtier than the polite pop guitar of the day, and it gives the Trio's records a rough edge that sounds ahead of its time. Burlison attacks the strings hard, driving the song with punchy, repeated riffs and short, stinging lead phrases instead of fancy runs. The result sits closer to later garage rock than to smooth mid-1950s pop, and players chasing distortion would eventually hear these records as early signposts. Listen for the fuzzy crackle on the notes and the way Burlison lets his rhythm pattern double as a lead part, pushing the whole band forward.
