Chitlins con Carne opens Midnight Blue, and its relaxed, bluesy guitar over a Latin-tinged groove became one of Kenny Burrell's most widely borrowed performances. His solo is laid-back and economical, mixing blues licks with jazz phrasing and never rushing. The conga-driven rhythm gives the music a gentle sway, and Burrell sits comfortably inside it, letting phrases start late and end early. Blues players as well as jazz guitarists have long drawn on its vocabulary.
