Tarhatazed comes from Ilana, the album on which Mdou Moctar's full band first gave his playing a heavier rock backing. The groove is dense and driving, with bass and drums pushing hard behind him, and his guitar responds with more aggressive, electric lead work than on his earlier recordings. The fast runs still carry the melodic shapes of Tuareg music, but the setting gives them extra weight. It marked a turning point toward the heavier sound that would define his later records. Listen for the interplay between Moctar's lead and the rhythm guitar, which keeps a steady pattern underneath while his lines spiral upward.
