Supersonic was Oasis's first single, and the solo sounds exactly like a band that knew it had arrived. Noel Gallagher's lead is loud, saturated and completely unhurried, built from a few strong phrases rather than any technical flash. It sits in the middle of the song like a swagger between verses, keeping the mid-tempo groove heavy and self-assured. That approach, melodic and blunt, became a template for a lot of 1990s British guitar rock. Listen for the thick wall of rhythm guitar under the lead; the solo gains much of its power from the sheer density of sound around it, which gives even simple bends a sense of scale.
