Barcelona Nights comes from Nouveau Flamenco, a smoother, pop-leaning take on flamenco guitar that sold very widely. Ottmar Liebert's playing is melodic and polished, with a relaxed rhythm and a warm, clean sound. The piece draws on flamenco's harmonic colours and rhythmic feel but softens them into something easygoing. It helped introduce many listeners to Spanish guitar sounds, even if purists found it too gentle. For all that, the playing is clean and carefully judged, and its warmth is easy to like. Listen for the steady rhythmic groove and the singing melody that floats over it, designed for easy listening rather than dramatic intensity.
