Cueva del gato is a siguiriya from Almoraima, one of flamenco's most intense and tragic forms. Paco de Lucía plays it with a heavy, driving rhythm, punctuated by sudden, blindingly fast runs. The siguiriya's irregular rhythmic cycle gives the piece an unsettled, restless character that he exploits fully. His control of dynamics adds to the drama, moving from quiet menace to explosive outbursts. It is Paco at his most severe, with none of the sunny charm of his rumbas. Listen for how the fast runs erupt out of the heavy rhythmic passages, then stop abruptly, leaving the siguiriya's lurching pulse exposed again.
