Vamos features Joey Santiago's most abstract guitar playing, and it is a wonderful oddity in a band known for tight, catchy songs. Instead of notes, his solo is a burst of scraping, banging noise, the guitar treated as a percussion instrument or a sound source to be abused. Strings are scratched, the instrument is hit and bent, and the result sounds more like a junkyard than a guitar break. It shows Santiago's willingness to push beyond conventional soloing, and it has encouraged many indie players to treat noise as a legitimate musical choice.
