Nearly Lost You became a hit through the Singles soundtrack, and Gary Lee Conner's solo gives it a 1960s undertone. His playing draws on psychedelic rock, with swirling phrasing and a slightly exotic flavour that stands apart from the heavier grunge sound around it. The solo is melodic and compact, adding colour and atmosphere without overshadowing Mark Lanegan's deep, commanding vocal. It shows how Screaming Trees mixed garage psychedelia with alternative rock. Listen for the bending, spiralling lines that seem to lean backward toward the sound of late-1960s rock, a small time warp in the middle of a 1990s hit.
