Midnight in Harlem features some of Derek Trucks's most soulful slide playing. Using his fingers rather than a pick and playing in open tuning, he coaxes long, singing lines from his SG, with slides so precise they sound almost like a voice. His solo is patient and melodic, drawing on gospel, blues and Indian music. It fits perfectly with Susan Tedeschi's heartfelt vocal. Trucks is widely considered one of the finest slide guitarists of his generation, and this song shows why. Listen for the way he glides between notes with microtonal precision, and for the moments where the slide seems to mimic Tedeschi's voice, answering her phrases.
