Slither is built on a heavy, grinding riff, and Slash's solo fits the song's aggressive mood. His lead is short and fiery, full of bends and quick pentatonic runs that recall his Guns N' Roses work while sounding a little rougher around the edges. The Les Paul tone is thick and saturated, with plenty of sustain to carry the held notes. There is no wasted motion: the solo makes its point and gets out, which suits a song this blunt. It showed that Slash's instincts for melody and attitude translated easily to a new band. Listen for how the solo emerges from the riff and returns to it, and for the wide vibrato he applies to held notes, a signature of his style.
